Since I was to lazy to make a spam protection mechanism myself, i used MathGuard. Hopefully this will end all spam in this page :)

Summer, Spam and other things
Submitted on 26th of June 2009 03:33:25 PM by Gedas

So, summer has come already.
Been a while since I had free time that i did not spend sleeping or watching anime.

I noticed I've been receiving a lot of SPAM recently. I will have to deal with it somehow.
All things considered it's not something I can't take care of.

So my studies in "informatics" are going quite well.

Ubuntu?
Submitted on 4th of February 2009 11:11:32 PM by Gedas

I had installed Windows XP on my Desktop PC(yes, I own them legally) and I thought I could use it for a bit longer.
But it lasted less than two months. I tried installing "PCLinuxOS 2008 Gnome edition", it ran slowly, unlike on my old laptop. It was SLOWER on intel pentium 4@2.6GHz 1024MB RAM GeForce 7600 than on my laptop with Intel Celeron@1.5GHz (256-32)MB RAM VIA integrated Graphics
However I installed ubuntu 8.04 on my Desktop and it runs faster than WinXP and PCLOS. I think I'll stay with ubuntu for now :)

Madmind: New kind of waves?
Submitted on 3rd of December 2008 06:23:26 PM by Gedas

Today during a break in physics lecture I started joking that there might be waves that travel faster than the speed of light. I am probably wrong. Ok MOST PROBABLY. But heres my idea anyway:
Water waves travel faster than water particles right? Electromagnetic waves carry their own particles that we call photons. For this reason they can travel even in vacuum. What if there's another for for of waves that travel like the ones in water, but in a different materials : photon streams (electromagnetic waves).

Now using Windows
Submitted on 3rd of December 2008 05:58:12 PM by Gedas

After a long time of using I decided to install windows. You know... Red alert 3 is out ...
First day I thought I just install it and start playing RA3 right away. I was wrong...
The setup loaded almost as long as the Ubuntu-live CD. It took about an hour to setup windows.
First boot: Now I'm gonna play RA3... but wait... can't find my driver CD as I did not need it for Linux.
I thought, oh well, I'll download the drivers. I tried going straight to nvidia site first. Only to find out I not only need to install the drivers for my nVidia GeForce 7600, but also for the network , sound cards...
I don't know what would i've done if hadn't had my laptop (Running PCLinuxOS 2007) and a flash USB drive.
The whole first day was spend searching/installing drivers and software. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but now I have a new favorite browser -- Google Chrome. First day ends without games...
Next day is monday, so I was only back home between afternoon and evening. I say "to hell with lectures, time to play".
I installed Red Alert 3, watched the amazing intro (I've seen it when i tried running RA3 with wine on the same machine), selected the Campaign, it was loading ... And suddenly nv_driver has crashed ... blablabla ... send and don't send. Why? WHY? this happened every time I tried to play. I tried patches, cracks all was useless. For an unknown reason I opened the nvidia control program and turned Anti-aliasting to "off". It fixed the problem ! Don't know how, but it seems you need some kind of sick thinking (mine worked) to get things running. The game (or maybe something else) is not very stable, it crashes a lot. I have to restart the computer after every crah, or RA3 will crash after just starting... Two days using windows and I already restarted my computer more times than the last two years when running Linux.

One more thing I observed: I have been leaving the PC on with Linux for months as my server and it did not get any slower or buggy during that time. With windows XP it's a different story. If I want it not to run slow I have to restart it. I don't know if any of these proplems are fixed in vista, I have no way to try it out.

The reason I use Linux
Submitted on 3rd of November 2008 01:16:51 PM by Gedas

It's official. Windows dislikes me. And I mean that literally. I was to help my neighbor set-up his router. When I came, windows started bugging without me touching anything. Could not access the router (IP 192.168.1.1). After I left he could access it. Magic... evil magic I tell you.
Windows doesn't like me, so I use Linux. For two years now(maybe more).

My system

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with
  • Intel Celeron M@1.5 GHz
  • 256* MB RAM
  • VIA integrated graphics card that eats at least 32 MB RAM
  • 40 GB internal HDD + 750 GB external hard drive
  • Dual-booting Windows XP and PC LinuxOS 2007

Now as I mentioned before, windows hates me, XP lags like hell, not everything works ... So I use only PC LinuxOS 2007.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
As you can see it looks decent, and has great configuration tools. It uses RPM packages and apt-get package manager (Synaptic is installed, but I prefer apt-get and aptitude)
What I use it for? Mostly watching movies, listening to music, programming, a bit playing(I don't have the time I used to have before I was in the university).
Conclusion: I found nothing to hate about it. The only weak point is that it's not updated very often. What I like is :
  • All Codecs work out-of-box
  • Wireless works out-of-box
  • KDE 3.5 runs faster than in any other distro I tried
  • Easy program installing

Meaning of life. New World
Submitted on 26th of October 2008 09:23:03 PM by Gedas

Many people ask "what is the meaning of life". Here I give my meaning of life: the new world.

Society

The government

Democracy is flawed and is to be changed if we want to move further. Earth is alive, and all living things have a central organ to coordinate all operations an procedures using various methods. The human brain could be the model of a government. In case of democracy, the bran would be a device out of cells that are the majority in the human body. That would not be the nuerons. The other cells would only think of operations that would only benefit them, neurons on the other hand, carry out operations that benefit the whole body, not just any single part.
The point: We need a governament consisting only of the geniuses and none of the morons, what is impossible with democracy. The current voting system is also bad as it allows everyone to vote, making the vote of a genius canceled by the vote of a retard. Allowing corupted officials that can buy votes for a jar of pickles. That should not be in the new world.
The way to do it: only people of about 10~20% above average intelect should be able to vote, and only those who have the intelect 40-50% above average should be able to become candidates to be elected to govern. You can call this selective democracy.

Population control

There are too many people living in earth already. The developed countries have a birth rate lower than the death rate. This is natural and is a natural way of solving the problem. The undeveloped countries are a contrary. There are many people starving in Africa. Why? Because they do not want to work to survive, but to depend on the help of others. If one does not care for himself, why should others care? Let the nature decide.

Food

The worlds population is continuing to grow, without action to change that, food supply will not be enough for the majority at this rate soon. The wise choice is to genetically modify food. Many foolish people think it's bad, but I'd rather eat food of a bit lesser quality than starve to death.

Technology

Manual labor

The new world will bring new possibilities to humanity. Creation of artificial inteligence, considered as a holy grail for poeple like me, is only one step. Having machines doing most of work needs atleast a spark of inteligence. When we have AI, we can extend it to do more and more in the end eliminating the need of physical work to be done by humans. Later we can have organic machines with the inteligence to help and serve the humans. This will be the end of manual labor.

Extension of human life

All life on earth has similarities, but the time of life is very diferent for each species. This leads to idea that life itself can be prolonged by genetically modifying the human DNA. This could extend the life of an individual from 20% to 2000% over time as the technology progresses.

Ethernal life

Considered to be the ultimate achievement by many, from the beginning of time it seems to be possible in the next few centuries if the human progress continues going forward exponentially. This will be achieved after a combination of technologies, most important:
  • Human cloning
  • Information transfer beetween brain
Bodies do age and die. Even if we can slow the aging, we can't completely stop it. The human brain is the core, but the information is what makes us what we are. If we could transfer it to another vessel, we could continue our life. Human brain is a computer, so we only need an interface to do the transfer. And what better vessel for you than your own body. Cloned to be young of course.

Creation of life

Creation. The ultimate in expression. From this point humanity can be considered gods by the definition of the ancients.

Conlusion: Every sane person is invited to disagree with my vision of the meaning of life and the new world. However I only accept logical arguments based on science, life or observation. I don't care about no religion, as they all are only superstisions, created trying to explain things.

Update and the hate Linux thing
Submitted on 1st of October 2008 11:18:53 PM by Gedas

Today I have attended a "Software freedom" conference and what they accomplish is not to prove anyone to use open source software, on the contrary actually I think they have scared people away. That's why I decided to hate Linux from now.
The first target is the Baltix Linux distribution. Let's examine what we get when we load the CD:
1. A very ugly bootsplash will try to scare people away.
2. Now we are logged in an ugly gnome environment. Here everything from wallpaper, icons to the widget style is so ugly as if it was made before 1993 by a child from kindergarten.
3. Besides the ugliness it boasts to have tools to connect to your mobile phone or something. I was not able to check that as my cellphone is better compared to a stone that to a cellphone from today.
4. The localization that probably what should have mattered the most is not done any better than everywhere. The Lithuanian interface becomes English in many places, so one would probably do better with an English one.
5. It has a lot of useless software installed that I don't see near to useful.

The conclusion is: if you want to make Ubuntu look as bad as it can, get Baltix. Better yet if you want them to think that open source is not ready and is awful, show them Baltix.
